UC Merced to resume classes Wednesday morning

UC Merced classes will resume as scheduled on Wednesday morning, the campus police announced Tuesday evening.

A suspicious package was found in the east wing of Kolligian Library this morning, the university announced this morning, resulting in evacuation of the area near the library, including the UC Merced store, library bus turnaround and Ranchers Road.

The university rearranged meeting sites for several classes.

The east wing will also reopen Wednesday morning, campus police said.

No announcement has been made concerning the contents of the mystery package.

The Merced Police Department Bomb Squad removed the package from the campus for further investigation.

The university was the site of non-violent demonstrations Monday to protest tuition increases and UC Regents' spending policies.

There is no evidence, so far, that the package and demonstrations are related, the university said.
