UC Merced one of ‘greenest’ colleges in world

The University of California at Merced is the 10th-greenest college campus in the world, according to a study released Tuesday by Universitas Indonesia.

Two years ago, the university initiated the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking system that measures and assigns scores to a variety of campus environmental practices.

"The aim of this ranking is to provide the result of online survey regarding the current condition and policies related to Green Campus and Sustainability in the universities all over the world," according to UI. "It is expected that by drawing the attention of university leaders and stake holders, more attention will be given to combating global climate change, energy and water conservation, waste recycling, and green transportation."

UC Merced finished third worldwide in the Energy and Climate Change category.

UC Merced maintains a page on its website exploring its efforts and accomplishments in sustainability.

Merced is the newest campus in the University of California system.

It was opened in 2005 and has a student body totaling about 5,800.

Among its plans is to open a school of medicine.
