According to a report today from VG 24/7, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag publisher Ubisoft estimates gamers will be able to play three to five hours outside the Animus in the modern day setting of the game.
In a question and answer with UbiBlog, Assassin’s Creed 4 game director Ashraf Ismail said gamers will spend probably between 20 and 25 minutes doing present day activities required by the game’s main path –– a couple minutes for each of the five times the player leaves the Animus.
But, if players want to do everything available in the present day –– hack computers, access rooms, find everything –– Ismail said they could spend three to five hours outside the Animus.
Without getting into too much detail, the main gameplay needs the protagonist to Edward Kenway to do some activities outside the Animus to further the over-arching story of Assassin’s Creed.
But Ismail said those modern day parts are minimal, because some people “don’t really like the present day, and that’s OK.”
“You don’t have to like it, but it’s part of the brand,” Ismail said. “For the people who like the present day and are big fans, we put in a lot of fan service and a lot of fun optional content. You get to choose if you want it or not.”
Assassin’s Creed 4 hits shelves for the PlayStation 3, Wii U and Xbox 360 on Oct. 29 in North America and will launch alongside the Xbox One and PS4 in mid-November.
