Ubisoft confirms that an ‘Assassin’s Creed’ for Xbox 360, PS3 is in development

When information about Assassin’s Creed Unity was first leaked, the same sources claimed that a second Assassin’s Creed title was in the works for last-gen consoles. Since Assassin’s Creed Unity will release only on new-gen platforms, the leak suggested that another game would be launched exclusively for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. However, even after Unity was officially confirmed, the existence of a second title remained secret until now. Finally announcing the project, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed during a financial report that a new Assassin’s Creed is being developed for last-gen systems as VG247 reported on July 10.

Not only did Guillemot reveal that a new Assassin’s Creed title for the Xbox 360 and PS3 is now in development, he also stated that they will be unveiling the game soon. As VG247 pointed out, the original leak specified that this mystery last-gen title would launch around the same time as Assassin’s Creed Unity. If this is true, fans could expect to see two Assassin’s Creed games release this year.

The move to separate the popular series across the two current console generations provides Ubisoft the opportunity to further build a franchise out the Assassin’s Creed universe. Furthermore, the developer can focus on providing a truly next-gen experience on the Xbox One and Playstation 4 without being subjected to last-gen limitations. At the same time, Ubisoft can still cater to the larger user-base of the last-gen platforms by ensuring that the series straddles both old and new consoles alike.

Assassin’s Creed Unity launches later this fall on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The game is set during the French Revolution and will feature four-player co-op support during specific missions. The newly confirmed second Assassin’s Creed project, coming only to Xbox 360 and PS3, does not currently have a release date scheduled.
