Ubi Workshop confirms identity of 'Assassin's Creed 4' hero (spoiler warning) (Photos)

The recent announcement of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag came with very little details. Released box art shows us a new assassin with blonde hair, and as far as we can surmise, the game takes place in the Caribbean, with a strong pirate theme.

Additional details are going to be released by Ubisoft on Monday, but Ubi Workshop, the merchandise store of Ubisoft, tweeted a link to the Assassin's Creed Wikia character profile page of Edward Kenway, father of Haytham Kenway and grandfather of Connor Kenway, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed 3. Ubi Workshop's Facebook page also briefly displayed a new character image (heavily cropped) of Edward, but was quickly removed.

In the Wikia page, Edward's description reads:

Edward Kenway (unknown - 1735) was an English privateer and occasional pirate, and a member of the Assassin Order. He was the father of Haytham Kenway, who would later be converted to the Templar Order by Edward's former employee Reginald Birch. He was the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton and an ancestor of Desmond Miles.

The page goes on to describe some specific instances of Edward's training of Haytham, and even how Edward's life ended.

At the bottom of the page, there are three points of trivia about Edward:

  • Edward is shown to have at least four flintlock pistols on him.
  • "Edward" means "rich guard", derived from the Old English elements ead "rich, blessed" and weard "guard."
  • "Kenway" is an Old English name meaning "brave royal fighter."

Hopefully Monday will bring a trailer and revelations into the story of AC4 and how it ties into the grander story of Desmond Miles.
