On Saturday night U2 received a special honor in Palm Springs. The band was in town to accept the Sonny Bono Visionary Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. According to Rolling Stone Magazine on Friday, the moment honored the track in the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

“We are kind of in awe of what they done with this film. And delighted to be small part,” said Bono on the red carpet of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The star downplayed the band’s role in the film, but fans will agree the music sets the tone in this moving film.

It’s no surprise that the band was tapped to help with the music for this film. In the 1970s U2 played their first Anti-Apartheid Movement in Dublin. The band helped the fans understand what Nelson Mandela was trying to do in South America and became friends with the famous leader. Over the decades, the band has revisited the man and his mission offering music as their contribution to better the world.

Now that the movie about Nelson Mandela is being seen by the fans, it is U2 who once again is sharing their music to help the message be heard. The track Ordinary Love definitely tugs at everyone’s heart as it reminds us all how Nelson Mandela made the world chance and he was only one man.

Take a look at the video clip of Bono talking about the honor of receiving an award in Palm Springs. The band members look delighted.
