U2 & Florence and the Machine at Spartan Stadium: what they wore

U2 and Florence + the Machine are not only vocally talented bands, but they are also energizing performers. In addition to the music and stage settings, the artists’ wardrobe plays a large role in the tone of the concert.

When Florence Welch took the stage to open for U2, it was refreshing to see a female artist in something flowy and carefree; a drastic change from the tight, short, ripped and revealing that now seems to be the norm of women when they perform.

As she (literally) ran around the stage barefoot in a magenta draped gown, she looked like a little girl playing dress up. Not restricted, nor taking herself too seriously, it was all about being comfortable, having fun and of course, the music.

Conversely to her breezy, appropriate for a hot summer in Michigan ensemble, U2 wore their signature looks: Bono in leather and his dark shades and The Edge is a knitted cap. While not ideal for jumping around in the humidity, their apparel pulled together the mood of the concert and what the people came to see—the rock band they grew up listening to. U2 wore tight shirts, but they weren’t ‘trying too hard.’ The band has been recording for over 20 years and they still give a high energy show. They talk to the crowd (while sometimes politically based), they interact with the fans at every angle, and they do it all in ‘concert clothes’ that represent them—not trying to be ‘new’ just being them...even if it’s way too hot for leather pants!
