U.S. Women face Scotland in Sermanni's first match as head coach

The U.S. Women’s National Team kicks off their 2013 schedule when they play their first match under new head coach Tom Sermanni today. The U.S. women face Sermanni’s native Scotland at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla. at 4 p.m. CST. The match may be viewed through a live ussoccer.com stream.

The two teams face other again Feb 13th in Nashville as Sermanni looks to determine his roster for the Algarve Cup in March. The U.S. is in group B and will face Iceland, China and Sweden.

Sermanni named the 18 player roster that will suit up for the match and all four FC Kansas City players are included. Goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart, defender Becky Sauerbrunn and midfielders Lauren Cheney and Kristie Mewis. If Mewis plays she will earn her first cap with the senior team. Since it is a friendly and there is typically a larger number of substitutions allowed, it is likely that all four will see time in the game.

U.S. roster vs. Scotland:

GOALKEEPERS (2): 18-Nicole Barnhart (FC Kansas City), 21-Jill Loyden (Sky Blue FC)

DEFENDERS (5): 26-Julie Johnston (Santa Clara), 11-Ali Krieger (Washington Spirit), 5-Kelley O’Hara (Sky Blue FC), 3-Christie Rampone (Sky Blue FC), 4-Becky Sauerbrunn (FC Kansas City)

MIDFIELDERS (7): 25-Yael Averbuch (Göteborg FC), 7-Shannon Boxx (Chicago Red Stars), 12-Lauren Cheney (FC Kansas City), 17-Tobin Heath (Paris Saint-German), 10-Carli Lloyd (Western NY Flash), 23-Kristie Mewis (FC Kansas City), 9-Heather O’Reilly (Boston Breakers)

FORWARDS (4): 14-Sydney Leroux (Boston Breakers), 13-Alex Morgan (Portland Thorns FC), 22-Christen Press (Tyresö FF), 20-Abby Wambach (Western NY Flash)

Game notes: Kristie Mewis is not the only player that could earn her first cap. Julie Johnston, the captain of the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup champions could see time on the back line. It would not be surprising to see Christen Press, a former MAC Hermann Trophy winner at Stanford and the second-leading scorer in the Swedish First Division for FC Goteborg.
