U.S. VegWeek 2014 kicks off nationwide meatless movement

Today marks the beginning of US VegWeek 2014, an entire week dedicated to a nationwide movement of vegetarian and vegan awareness.

VegWeek was founded by nonprofit animal advocacy group Compassion Over Killing in 2009 as a way to encourage Americans to pledge to be meat-free for at least one week out of the year. Since its inception, VegWeek has grown tremendously and thousands of people have taken the pledge. Restaurants across the country are offering special menus and discounts. A number of vegetarian and vegan cooking demonstrations, bake sales, movie screenings, festivals, and much more will be held all over. Even politicians are getting in on the action and taking the pledge.

In San Diego, check out these eateries for some great finds in honor of U.S. VegWeek 2014:

Both locations of Loving Hut will be offering a 10% discount coupon at their website.

Sprinkles Cupcakes in La Jolla is serving up a BOGO deal on vegan red velvet cupcakes.

Peace Pies in Ocean Beach will have a full line of new vegan items for the week.

Local Habit in Hillcrest is hosting a fundraiser April 22, donating 20% of sales from select vegan items to Compassion Over Killing.

Stay tuned for more VegWeek happenings throughout the week!
