Early this morning, the Department of Defense announced the death of an Army paratrooper who died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Sgt. 1st Class Samuel C. Hairston, 35, of Houston, Texas, died yesterday, Aug. 12, 2014, in Ghazni, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire with enemy forces. The Pentagon release did not mention other Soldiers who might have been injured in this incident. This incident is not under investigation.

Sgt. 1st Class Hairston was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

The family has yet to release information regarding services for their Soldier.

According to the Associated Press, the death of this Soldier brings to 2, 199 the number of U.S. military losses since Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S. led invasion of Afghanistan, began in late 2001. American combat forces are scheduled to be out of Afghanistan by the end of 2016.
