ISIS and Sunni fighters have forced 50,000 Christian Iraqis into an unsustainable environment where they are stranded without food and water. President Obama has authorized a humanitarian mission to supply them by dropping necessities from low flying C130 cargo planes that are vulnerable to rocket attacks. The cargo planes were accompanied by F/A 18 fighter escorts that were authorized to defend if attacked. The President emphasized that the U.S. will not be drawn into another Iraq war initiative.
Right answer. Iraq is a hellish situation where it has been proven time and again that the people living there can’t get to critical mass to govern. The boundaries of Iraq were externally imposed and therefore the people inside the boundaries may not have an affinity with the government. The government has failed to address the pluralistic needs of diverse people. Instead, one faction or another gets in power at the disenfranchisement of another.
Do the Kurds have it right? They have fought for identity as a unique ethnic people. However, establishing governments that are based on exclusion rather than inclusion and tolerance isn’t the right course in a modern world, is it?
Now, the Yezidis are stranded and are desperate for humanitarian assistance. They are being persecuted by both brands of Muslims. That gets to the heart of a common problem that is Islamic intolerance.
“The Yazidi (also Yezidi, Êzidî, Yazdani, ایزدیان) are a Kurdish ethno-religious community whose syncretic but ancient religion is linked to Zoroastrianism and ancient Mesopotamian religions. They live primarily in the Nineveh Province of northern Iraq, a region once part of ancient Assyria. Additional communities in Armenia, Georgia and Syria have been in decline since the 1990s, their members having emigrated to Europe, especially to Germany.”
Intolerance begets intolerance, and that is a persistent warning to Islamists. It appears that they are at war with the free world and that is a jihad that radicals cannot win. Modification and modernization of the belief system is essential for acceptance in the free world. Without that, the label, “terrorist” applies.
Diversity is a good thing in the world. Some people are left stranded in unsustainable situations. That is a challenge everywhere for free people to address. Humans need a fighting chance to survive. They can’t be corralled in unsustainable situations like Gaza either.
“Obama OKs air strikes in Iraq, begins open-ended humanitarian mission

President Obama expanded U.S. military operations in Iraq on Thursday, authorizing both “targeted air strikes” on Islamic militants and an open-ended humanitarian mission to help thousands of besieged Iraqis on the verge of starvation.
The humanitarian mission began Thursday night as U.S. aircraft flew over Iraq’s northern Kurdish region to conduct air drops. That included two C-130 and one C-17 cargo planes, which were escorted by two F/A-18 Super Hornets, a senior defense official said.
U.S. troops from the U.S. Central Command pushed out pallets of food, water and other supplies over a mountain where about 40,000 Iraqis from the Yazidi minority are stranded and trapped by forces with the Islamic State. The aircraft spent about 15 minutes flying at a low altitude over the drop zone, exposed to militants who may have surface-to-air weaponry.”
