U.S. officials say that three days of cruise missile strikes may come "as early as Thursday."
The strikes are said to be an intimidation tactic, "to send a message," rather than toppling Assad's government.
NBC News said U.S. officials told them the strikes could begin on Thursday. They also said in their report:
According to this report U.S. intelligence will release "a formal assessment" by next week. They make it "crystal clear" that Assad's government is responsible.
White House spokesman, Jay Carney, said the strikes aren't meant to take-down Assad. In Carney's daily briefing, he said:
"The options that we are considering are not about regime change. (Haven't we heard that one before?) He continued: "They are about responding to the clear violation of an international standard that prohibits the use of chemical weapons."
One of the most vocal advocates is Sen. McCain, who said: "The important part of this whole situation is, is this just going to be a retaliatory strike that has no lasting impact or something that changes the momentum on the ground in Syria?"
The three days of strikes may just be the start according to NBC. Once the three days of strikes are over the situation will be reassessed and if further strikes are needed, they will come.
If targets, which allegedly have been provided by Syrian rebels, have been missed more strikes can be expected. The missile strikes that might begin on Thursday will be launched from the four destroyers stationed off the coast of Syria. They are the USS Barry, the USS Mahan, the USS Ramage and the USS Gravely.
Those destroyers are going to be joined today by a fifth destroyer, the USS Stout. It's headed to Syria and entered the Mediterranean, through the Straights of Gibraltar. However, according to the NBC report, it won't be part of the missile strike.
The plans appear to be at the ready despite, "Video showing rebels launching chemical attacks. Will Obama order strikes on Syria even though evidence points toward the FSA being responsible? Will this administration consider all the evidence or will they plow ahead with the missile strikes? Will they launch another war despite most Americans opposing intervention in Syria?
Some key U.S. allies have given the "thumbs up" sign for limited strikes. Apparently the strikes could take place without U.N. approval since Russia has veto power to block any action against their ally Syria. If the strikes happen Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said it would be a "very grave violation of international law."
China said the U.S. "must refrain from hasty armed intervention."
According to Iran if the U.S. launches missile strikes it could be a trigger that would "enflame the Middle East." Syrian President Assad said if the U.S. attacks them they will attack Israel. Attacks by The United States could very well prove to be the spark that ignites a powder keg that could see more of America's Marines, soldiers, airmen and sailors coming home in flag-draped coffins.
We would do well to stop being the world's military police. It's not our nation's responsibility to enforce the U.N. agenda upon other nations. Many lives have been lost due to America's imperialist attitude. It's time to rise up America and call your senators, congressmen, write them and let them know you oppose intervention.
It's time to silence warmongers like John McCain, because war in Syria will most definitely bring more grief to our nation. More lives lost, more lives wasted in a war we have no business be involved in.
