U.S. issues travel warning to Mexico visitors

The United States State Department is now suggesting that American travelers not go to all or parts of Mexico.  In the largest travel advisory since 2006 when Mexico increased its drug war, the State Department is advising that Americans not travel to 14 Mexican states – all or parts of them.

The locations include all of Coahuila, Tamaulipas, and Chihuahua – all of which border Durango - and ten other Mexican states.  The areas cited are where Mexican drug cartels are at war.

According to the State Department’s advisory, United States' citizens have been murdered, kidnapped, and carjacked.

There are no travel warnings issued for Mexico City (the Federal District) or two of the most popular tourist destinations for American travelers, Cancun and Cabo San Lucas.

If travel is necessary to the 31 states in Mexico, it is advised that visitors stay within a reasonable distance of their hotel.

As could be expected, many of Mexico’s officials criticized the warning as it will most likely impact tourism and the economy of the troubled country.
