Michael Stec of Miami, 56, was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease called Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) eight days after receiving the influenza vaccine. Stec asked the Miami New Times if he could be sourced using his wife's maiden name because he works for a government agency that has not authorized him to speak.
Stec says that he can pinpoint the exact moment he fell ill and even has the receipt for it: a $32 influenza vaccine from a local CVS Pharmacy. He told the Miami New Times that, "At first I felt a tingling in my fingers and toes, but I didn't think anything of it." He realized that something was seriously wrong by the days end. His wife Isabelle said, "The next morning he couldn't walk," and added, "He was staggering around like he was drunk."
Isabelle called 911 when Stec started having trouble breathing. Shortly after paramedics arrived, Stec passed out. His diaphragm shut down an hour after he was rushed to the hospital. Doctors ended up cutting a hole in his throat and putting him on a breathing machine. Several times throughout the ordeal, Isabelle thought Michael was going die.
Stec said, "I cannot believe that the U.S. government would allow such a thing to be on the market." Stec questions the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's logic that the risk of GBS is worth being vaccinated against influenza. He says, "You can risk getting paralyzed, or you can risk a couple of weeks with the sniffles," and asks, "How can you put this in comparison?"
Stec says it will be months before he can return to work and may never fully recover. He is considering filing a lawsuit in the federal "vaccine court." In 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that federal law protects pharmaceutical companies from lawsuits by parents who say that vaccines injured their children.
