The U.S. government is now in shutdown mode because the Congress could not reach a settlement to avert this action. This is the 18th shutdown of the federal government. The shutdown does not stop everything in the government, only the nonessential services are halted until a new agreement is reached by Congress.
Certain government services are not affected by the shutdown. According to USA Today, government programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security will be run as usual. Also, apparently members of Congress are not affected by the shutdown. They will be receiving their normal salary.
Critical Services are also still in operation, these necessary tasks such as meat inspection, air traffic control, border patrol and defense.
According to MSN News, the number of federal workers forced into furlough because of the shutdown is estimated to be 800,000. WPRI 12 reported that Rhode Island who has a federal work force of 11,000 will furlough about 7,000 workers.
