It appears the United States may be confronted with a fiscal nightmare in the near future. Reuters reported on Sept. 28, 2013, "U.S. House moves federal government closer to shutdown." On Saturday the House of Representatives began preparations to reject an emergency spending bill which was approved by the Senate and instead pushed to delay President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law.
A U.S. government shutdown will be hard to avoid on Tuesday, due to the recent moves by the House of Representatives. The Republican controlled House was set to begin to vote on Saturday night. However, there appeared to be little doubt about the outcome among Republicans, who cheered and chanted jubilantly in a meeting earlier in the day after they chose their course of action. Democrats were looking grim at the prospects of a government shut down.
The New York Times has reported, "House Leaves U.S. on Brink of Shutdown." Republicans came from a closed door meeting on Saturday appearing unified and confident that they had the votes needed to delay the health care law. This action by the House appears certain to result in large parts of the government being shutdown as of 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday.Greater than 800,000 federal workers who are deemed nonessential are facing furloughs, and millions more could be working without paychecks.
These uncertain economic conditions for the U.S. government have been reverberating in a lack of consumer confidence and a slow down of many business across the United States with many workers facing less hours and layoffs. This is already beginning to spiral into increased credit debt for many Americans who are fearful of increasing car repossessions, home foreclosures, and not being able to pay rent on apartments.
This could all roll over into a chaotic and life threatening increase in homelessness and starvation on the streets across the United States. Things are looking as bad for the United States as during the 1929 Great Depression to a lot of people.
