An unusual 45-foot catamaran party boat capsized off the Florida coast on Sunday. Among the rescued passengers were thirty people and one dog. The incident happened off Key Biscayne, The Miami Herald reported.
The group of friends, including several students from the University of Miami and Miami Dade College, along with Brickell-area workers, had hired the 45-foot private make-shift catamaran on Sunday. They were heading back from a sand bar party when the boat started taking on water. Other good Samaritan boaters helped the Coast Guard and local authorities rescue the passengers -- including the dog -- within minutes.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, is looking at whether overcrowding may have played a role. According to commission spokesman Jorge Pino, the catamaran may have been an illegal charter with no real "captain" that charged $20 per person to transport people to and from Nixon Beach.
