It's was a big opening weekend, as Sam Raimi's long anticipated "Oz the Great and Powerful" was released in theaters this past Friday. Oz raked in $80.3 million for it's opening weekend. It is poised to become a blockbuster success and is the third-biggest March debut ever, by the end of it's theatrical run we should see "Oz" hitting it big in the box office sales.
The other modern update of a familiar fantasy tale, "Jack the Giant Slayer" is on the exact opposite of the spectrum. "Jack" brought in 10 million this weekend and a total of $43.8 million in it's two weeks of release. Essentially a flop, it will have a hard time reaching the $80 million "Oz" made in it's first week by the time it's theatrical run is at an end.
Jason Bateman and Mellisa McCarthy's comedy "Identity Thief" was third in the box office rankings on this pre-St. Patricks Day weekend with $6.32 million and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnsons next attempt at an American Crime drama "Snitch" came in fourth place, bringing in a total of $5.1 million.
