Presidents’ Day 2014 is here. To some, the observance of Presidents' Day in the United States goes very much unnoticed except that many get the day off from work and it's a great day for the shopaholics who are looking for “Presidents' Day Sales”.
Presidents' Day, also known as Washington's Birthday is intended to honor all the American Presidents, but most significantly George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, two of our greatest who were born in February. In 1968, the 90th Congress was determined to create a uniform system of federal Monday holidays. They voted to shift three existing holidays (including Washington's Birthday) to Mondays. The law took effect in 1971, and as a result, Washington's Birthday holiday was changed to the third Monday in February.
As our country celebrates this holiday honoring our past presidents, here are a few thoughts about how things are going. Many of our great former presidents would be in disbelief if they were here today to see how our nation is doing and how poorly we are handling our destiny.
The once great leader of the free world, the United States is abounding with troubles. Discontented, corruption, mistrust, betrayed, lied to and greediness are all words to describe most peoples' thoughts. Polls show that many citizens are displeased with the direction our country is heading and they believe the near future outlook is bleak. There is mistrust of our elected officials at all levels.
The country’s fiscal debt continues to rise at an alarming rate. Now over 17 trillion dollars, it grows at a daily rate of around three billion ($3,000,000,000) dollars. Yet, 49.5% of all Americans do not pay any federal income tax and at least 30 major corporations pay no federal income tax including; the wealthy National Football League, General Electric, Verizon, Wells Fargo and Boeing.
Our two major political parties are at constant odds with one another. Members of the two Houses of Congress and our President took an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution, to safeguard our freedoms and liberties but they are not doing it.
There has been a rise in Socialism, Marxism and Communism in our beloved democracy.
The country’s Justice Department is probably the most corrupt ever. And the head of it all, the nation’s Attorney General is an arrogant perjuring liar who should have been fired by the President (who lacks the balls do so to one of his buddies) several years ago.
The White House has been involved in quite a number of scandals including: the Fast and Furious gun debacle, the attack on our embassy in Benghazi, Libya, which led to the killing of U.S. citizens, Associated Press reporters’ phone records being hacked and tracked, the loss of millions by Solyndra, NSA spying and lying and the targeting schemes by the IRS to name a few.
Still, the country’s worst fiasco was created by the Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare) which is not very affordable for many and has caused millions to lose their health plans, lose their employee benefits and even their jobs, opposite of what was supposed to happen.
There have been months of stagnant job growth, a continued high-unemployment rate with a 35 year-low participation in the labor market with more than a million fewer workers on the job today than six years ago. Incomes are not rising, yet there are continuous increases in many taxes, food prices and other basic necessities.
Tons of wasted money has been spent on a failing education system. School districts are broke as students are lacking in many job skills as the numbers of school violence and shootings rise.
Lines at soup kitchens continue to grow as do the number of homeless seeking shelters. 20% of the nations’ population is on food stamps and the poverty rate is 15%, the highest since 1993. Suicide rates among the U. S. military are up.
Hardened criminals continue to be released from jails and criminals committing heinous crimes have their sentences constantly reduced by liberal federal judges.
There has been a downfall of moral and religious beliefs: lack of family values, too many single-parent families, continued high abortion rates and the continued crumbling of our inner-cities through drug use, poverty and crime; especially murder.
There’s been a recent increase in tobacco use which had been declining for years. Plus, the legalization of marijuana will only add to the growing numbers of potheads (as if there weren’t already enough crackpots in our country) and lead to an increase in other illegal drug use.
Racial tension is at a level not seen in decades.
Billions of dollars of aid given to foreign nations, while millions suffer in our own country. We have found out that we can’t afford to be the policeman of the world nor should we be the financier of the world’s ills especially to countries that hate us.
There has been numerous numbers of hacking into financial institutions, and massive identity threat which is ruining peoples’ finances and personal lives.
These aren’t things that just happened overnight. These trends have been brewing for a long time, but have rapidly accelerated in just the past few years and are bringing our once great nation to its knees.
