At age 77, actress Mary Tyler Moore is still one of America's most endearing — and enduring —celebrities. Sadly, according to a report in Closer Weekly, she is now almost blind.

Moore was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 33. In the article, which was posted Thursday, friends and former co-stars, including Betty White, explain the toll the disease has taken on Moore.

"Her eyesight is what the big problem is right now,” White said, adding that Moore “is almost beyond the point (of being able to see)."

White co-starred with Moore on the popular 1970s sitcom, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

The magazine reports that the illness forces Moore to stay close to home, where she stays connected to friends through phone calls.

“I don’t see her often, but I talk to her a bunch,” said Dick Van Dyke, who played Moore's husband in the 1960's series, “The Dick Van Dyke Show." “She hasn’t been too well. She’s really having a battle with it, I’m sorry to say.”

Type 1 diabetes, formerly known as juvenile diabetes, is a disease that is typically diagnosed in children and young adults. With Type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.

Friends add that Moore maintains the upbeat spirit that shined through on-screen and in person throughout her long-running career.
