The first teaser trailer for Tyler Perry’s latest film A Madea Christmas, hit the web less than a day ago. This will be the eighth film in Madea saga since the character’s first introduction in Diary of a Mad Black Woman back in 2002. Eleven years and four Razzie nominations later, the franchise apparently still has enough of a built in following that these films somehow manage to make money. It honestly boggles the mind.
Based on a stage play that was subsequently filmed for a DVD release back in 2011, this new teaser isn’t yet hinting at plot, so fans will have to wait for the first official trailer before they’ll be able to tell if Tyler stayed true to his play. To be quite honest, that probably doesn’t matter to anyone. The only true measure of the film’s success will be if it’s intended audience finds it funny. Apparently, enough people like this sort of thing that Perry can just continually flood the market with them, kicking out a new film about every six months.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas will open in D.C. theaters for a wide release on December 13. Expect it to open at Regal Gallery Place and local AMC theaters. The film stars Perry, Chad Michael Murray, Kathy Najimy, Alicia Witt, Eric Lively and Anna Maria Horsford, several of which appeared in the original play.
