Tyler Pastornicky extends hitting streak to 12 games in the G-Braves 7-4 loss

The Gwinnett Braves closed out their mini-home stand with the Charlotte Knights with a 7-4 loss Sunday at Coolray Field. The G-Braves (62-52) drop to 2.5 games behind the Durham Bulls (64-49) in the International League South after the Bulls win Sunday. The loss drops the Knights (55-60) 10.0 games back in third place in the division.

After a scoreless opening inning Charlotte started the scoring by plating three runs in the top of the 2rd inning then added a run in the 3rd and two more in the 4th inning to take a 6 run lead into the 5th. Gwinnett mounted a comeback over the next three innings scoring single runs in the 5th and 7th innings and a pair of runs in the 6th to cut the Knights lead to two at 6-4. Charlotte scored an insurance run in the top of the 8th then held Gwinnett scoreless the last two innings to secure the win.

RHP Julio Teheran (L, 12-2, 2.16 ERA) started and took his first loss since May 30th. He worked 3.0 innings, allowed 4 runs (all earned) on 4 hits, walked 4 and struck out 5. Teheran also gave up a homerun to lead-off the 2nd inning; LHP Dustin Richardson (ND, 0-0, 4.82 ERA) came on in the 4th and pitched 3.0 innings allowing 1 hit and 2 runs (both earned) along with 4 base-on-balls while striking out 4; RHP Arodys Vizcaino (ND, 1-0, 1.29 ERA) pitched a pair of innings giving up 3 hits and a run (unearned) and had 1 strikeout; RHP Steven Shell (ND, 2-2, 2.95 ERA) pitched the 9th inning and gave up 2 hits but didn’t allow a run.

SS Tyler Pastornicky and 2B Ruben Gotay led the offense accounting for 4 of the 6 hits and driving in all 4 runs for the G-Braves. Pastornicky (.408, 1 HR/9 RBI) went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double extending his hitting streak to 12 games (tied for longest streak of the season for the G-Braves). Pastornicky also drove in a pair of runs; Gotay (.258, 3 HRs/19 RBI) was 2-for-4 with a homer and 2 runs-batted-in.

ON DECK:

Gwinnett starts a four day, five game series in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to face the SWB Yankees (61-53/3.0 GB) of the IL North.  The G-Braves will start RHP Todd Redmond (7-8, 3.00 ERA) while the Yankees will sendLHP Greg Smith (3-2, 5.24 ERA) to the mound.

The IL announced Monday that 1B Jorge Vazquez and Columbus P Justin Germano have been named the League’s Batter and Pitcher of the week for W/E July 31. Columbus now has had six PoTW winners this season matching the G-Braves for most in the IL.
