Life Reduced to 130 Characters on Twitter

On September 22nd, Tyler, a new college freshman and accomplished violinist, committed suicide over a tweet and posted his last words on Facebook. Three days beforehand his roommate posted this to Twitter - "Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into Molly's room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay." After which said roommate purportedly streamed the private webcam video to the internet for others to watch.

College roommate spying on me? (one week ago http://answers.yahoo.com LAW and ETHICS)

so i asked to have the room for a couple hours, obviously I wanted privacy, my roommate admits (on a social networking website) to remotely turning on his webcam and watching me for a little bit (without the consent or knowledge of anybody in the room)....needless to say, i don't feel comfortable sharing a room with someone who would do something like this....what seems like the best course of action to you?

thanks, i get what you're saying i guess I'm just afraid I don't have enuff stuff to go on, i mean I really don't think he saw anything pornographic, but maybe he was trying too...idk...and I'm just worried about things becoming a huge mess after this cuz i mean, someone reports you and then you might have to spend the rest of the semester living with them anyway because of stupid administration and then there's the chance I could get a new roommate that's even worse....idk...I guess i just need to think about it...talking to the RA seems like a good idea now tho...

Report him. What he is doing is completely inappropriate. Also put some black electrical tape over the webcam when you aren't using it.

You really only have two options report him to whoever handles room assignments or do nothing. You could also report him to the cops which is what I would do. They tend to take voyeurism very seriously. I'm not trying to be mean but if you don't have the guts to take control of the situation it is not going to get better. So if you decide you don't want to report it than you are going to have to live with the fact that your roommate can't be trusted. Black electrical tape of the web cam will do wonders.

Tyler Clementi, a life, or the end of one, comes in the limited character form of a Facebook mobile status update. Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.

I think this is tragic. When people commit suicide, it is a very selfish act. I also wonder if his parents treated him badly. What part did they play in his embarrassment?
