A Texas police chief was shot to death Saturday at a traffic stop.

CNN reported that Michael Pimentel was flown to University Hospital in San Antonio following the shooting. He died shortly afterward.

Pimentel worked in the San Antonio suburb of Elmendorf, which has a population of roughly 1,500. Before that, he was police chief of the San Antonio Independent School District. KWTX reported that Pimentel had been the sheriff in the area for just over a year.

The Officer Down Memorial page stated that he pulled over a car around 11:30 a.m., which led to a struggle before he was shot.

The suspect, 24-year-old Joshua Manuel Lopez, was taken into custody by deputies from Bexar County. He will be charged with capital murder of a police officer, according to Roseanne Hughes, a spokeswoman for the county’s Sheriff’s Office.

There was reportedly a warrant for Lopez’s arrest prior to the shooting for a misdemeanor charge of graffiti.

A statement has yet to be released from Lopez’s family.

Condolences or questions regarding funeral arrangements can be sent to Mayor Evelyn Lykins of the Elmendorf Police Department.

She can be reached by phone at 210-635-8710 or by mail at PO Box 247 Elmendorf, TX 78112.
