Twyla Tharp's world premiere of The Princess and the Goblin at Atlanta Ballet

Atlanta Ballet will perform Twyla Tharp's world premiere of The Princess and the Goblin at Cobb Energy Centre. Co-commissioned by Atlanta Ballet and Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the ballet will receive its world premiere February 10-19, followed by the Canadian premiere in fall 2012.

Tharp spent most of the summer in Atlanta working with the company to create and choreograph the work. There were only seven dancers and a small cast of children when rehearsals began in May. When the curtain goes up on February 10, the cast will include 13 students from Atlanta Ballet's Centre for Dance Education, along with the full professional company. This premiere marks Tharp's first use of children in a full-length ballet in her almost 50-year choreographic career.

The ballet is set to music by Franz Schubert, arranged and orchestrated by composer and Schubert scholar Richard Burke. The Atlanta Ballet Orchestra will perform live, and will be led by guest conductor Gary Sheldon. Set designs are by Caleb Levengood and costumes are by Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Anne Armit. Lighting is by Tony-Award winning designer Donald Holder.
