Daytona Beach Police say a two-year old boy drowned Monday, but not before a neighbor dove into a pond trying to rescue him. A report on the Daytona Beach Police website says the neighbor heard screaming near her home on Aleatha Drive, and found the boy’s mother at the back of the mother’s house saying the child was in the pond and the mother did not know how to swim. Police say the neighbor, Rhonda Moore, then jumped into the pond, pulled the boy out and started CPR. The Daytona Beach Fire Department also responded to the call, and the boy was transported to Halifax Hospital. However, the boy passed away later at the hospital.
Daytona Beach Police say the grandmother of the child had legal custody of the boy and also of a four-year old, and had left the children with the mother while running errands. Police say the grandmother asked where the two-year old was when she returned, and that it appeared the two children had “…wandered outside without being missed.” Police say the deceased child was Clayton Bland, and added that the Florida Department of Children and Families was at the scene of the incident Monday afternoon also.
