One woman was in critical condition with a partially severed leg and another suffered a broken pelvis after they were struck by a vehicle and dragged up a small embankment Friday in southwest Atlanta.
And police are still searching for the driver who left the scene.
The incident happened shortly before midnight on Peeples Street near White Street, according to Atlanta police.
Investigators said Ms. Adrienne Smith and Ms. Brianna Johnson were sitting on a brick wall at 824 Peeples St. when they were struck by a white 2013 Ford Edge.
The driver attempted to negotiate a curve, but ended up leaving the roadway and striking the two women, police spokesman Officer John Chafee said.
“As the Ford continued, it damaged the brick wall and dragged the women up a small embankment,” Officer Chafee said. “The Ford continued and struck a chained link fence which was the property of Atlanta Public School system.”
Ms. Smith was pinned under the vehicle, until she was freed by first responders, he said. Both women were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle was observed by school security running from the scene and the vehicle he was driving is suspected to have been stolen from an Avis rental lot.
