Less than two weeks ago, Homeland Security Department Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters at the Bridge of The Americas border crossing in El Paso, TX, that security along the U.S./Mexican border “is better now than it ever has been,” and that the so-called spillover violence is not yet a serious issue.
She went on to say: “There is a perception that the border is worse now than it ever has been. That is wrong. The border is better now than it ever has been.”
On Monday, Sergio Salcido Luna, 25, and Kevin Joel Romero, 28, were waiting in line at the San Ysidro border crossing when a gunman walked up to their truck and opened fire.
Both men were shot multiple times and died on the scene.
Luna and Romero were both U.S. citizens who worked in San Diego for West Coast Beverage, and were on their way to work when they were killed.
Both men lived in Tijuana, reportedly taking advantage of Mexico’s much cheaper living costs.
The company vehicle in which they were traveling bore California license plates.
