Two twelve-year-old Wisconsin girls were charged for allegedly brutally stabbing another twelve-year-old girl nineteen times in the woods to gratify a mythological creature called Slender Man they learned about online.
Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, planned to kill the girl several months in advance. They invited their friend over for a slumber party and were going to kill her in her sleep but decided to do it while playing hide and go seek in the woods.
Apparently, one of the girls held the victim down while the other one stabbed her in her arms, legs and torso. They intended on killing her hoping to see Slender Man so they would know he is real and become his “proxies.”
The stab wounds pierced major organs and missed a major artery near her heart by a millimeter. The girls left their victim lying in the woods and luckily, she was able to crawl to a road where a bicyclist found her. Police were called and she was rushed to surgery. She is currently in stable condition.
Both girls were charged as adults with first-degree attempted homicide and if convicted, could face up to 60 years in prison. The girls are due back in court June 11, 2014.
It is uncommon for young girls to commit such a crime but there are many reasons that could of drove these girls to carry out a planned murder.
Anissa Weier told investigators that Morgan Geyser introduced her to the website http://creepypasta.wikia.com/ in December. Geyser then later decided that they needed to kill someone to be proven worthy of Slender Man.
Slender Man is an alleged paranormal figure supposed to have been in existence for centuries. He is rumored to specifically kill children and can be found in sections of the woods. The site even details historic references of him in Brazilian Cave Paintings, Egyptian Hieroglyphs, German Woodcuts, Romanian Mythology and English Mythology. The information found on Slender Man can make his existence very believable to young children.
It is not certain at this time if these girls have any mental illnesses but that is not necessarily needed for a child to kill. This alleged stabbing closely relates to a "cult killing" because it was done based on unorthodox beliefs that satisfied the needs of a paranormal figure.
Kids will identify themselves with fictitious creatures because it gives them a feeling of power and makes them feel like they have a secret connection to another world. They will sometimes decide that human sacrifice is necessary to increase their powers or in this case becoming proxies to a mythological creature.
In addition, in current times, violent television and video games contribute to conditioning children to become violent without teaching them the consequences. Kids are trained to accept violence as a natural part of life.
Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman, a West Point military psychologist, says, “We have to be taught to kill. It doesn’t come naturally. Within the midbrain, there is a powerful, God-given resistance to killing your own kind. Almost every species has it. Only sociopaths lack this violence immune system."
Is it right for these girls to be charged as adults? Is society failing children with the constant violence all around us? There are still not enough details on the case to know for sure if these girls will continue to be a danger to society. We still do not know if they have remorse and we still are not certain if this fantasy in their minds turned to a reality that will leave them behind bars for most of their lives.
