Two Truths and a Lie can help students prepare for standardized tests

Two Truths and a Lie is usually played as an icebreaker during a party. Each person writes two true statements and one false statement about themselves. They should not be in any particular order.

Everyone else has to guess which statement is false. Everyone gets to know each other a little better, so it makes the perfect back to school game.

Two Truths and a Lie uses a format similar to those used in standardized test. In a test, there are four or five answers with only one being correct. However, there are some trick questions. These questions include the word “not.” Those students not paying attention would get the question wrong. Instead of trying to find one correct answer, students would have to find the one answer that is wrong.

To prepare students for these tricky questions on a test, play Two Truths and a Lie at least once a month. You can use classroom materials to play the game.

If the topic were math, students could write two number sentences that are true and one that isn’t. Another method is to write definitions of key math terms.

For social studies, students could write facts about a famous person or event. For language arts, students can write about the events in the story.
