Kristen Maloney has a new Olympic bronze medal -- and now a new job, as well.
Maloney, a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic squad that received its bronze medal from the Sydney Olympic Games at the U.S. Championships earlier this month, is set to become an assistant coach at the University of New Hampshire, the university announced Wednesday.
Maloney won the U.S. all-around title in 1998 and 1999 and finished second in 2000. She competed for UCLA from 2001 to 2005, where she helped the Bruins to three NCAA team titles.
After graduating from UCLA, Maloney performed with Cirque du Soleil, then moved back to the east coast, where she taught preschool and coached gymnastics at her old gym, the Parkettes, in Allentown, Pa. At the U.S. Championships, where she and her five teammates from Sydney received their Olympic bronzes after a 10 year wait, she said she hoped to become an NCAA coach.
Two of Maloney's teammates from the 2000 Olympic team, Jamie Dantzscher and Elise Ray, have also become gymnastics coaches.
In other college news: Charter Oak's Jaclyn McCartin, a former level 10 national champion who finished 12th at the U.S. Championships, has committed to the University of Washington, according to College Gym Fans. McCartin, currently a senior in high school, is scheduled to enter UW in the fall of 2011.
