Tuesday night, the Mega Millions jackpot reached a whopping $636 million dollars and two tickets held the winning numbers; the winning Mega Million tickets were sold in California and Georgia, according to MSN.
This was the second-largest lottery jackpot prize in U.S. history. The winning numbers were: 8, 14, 17, 20, 39, and the Mega Ball number was 7.
One ticket was sold in San Jose, California at Jennifer's Gift Shop and the other in Georgia; lottery officials didn't know what city in Georgia the winning ticket was sold. Lottery ticket sales exceeded what was expected Tuesday morning.
This jackpot started to grow on Oct. 4 and 22 drawings went by without a winner.
The next Mega Millions drawing will be held on Friday night and it will reset to $15 million.
The largest jackpot so far was in March 2012 when three winners split the $656 million prize; those Mega Millions tickets were sold in Kansas, Maryland and Illinois.
In May of 2013, the Powerball jackpot hit $590.5 million and one ticket holder won it all; this was the second largest jackpot.
The Mega Millions lottery is played in 43 states, in Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Every Tuesday and Friday night the Mega Millions drawings are held at 11 p.m.
