Two Texas men charged in burglary of off-duty Jackson police officer's vehicle

Two Texas men will be arraigned Monday on burglary, theft and vandalism charges after an off-duty Jackson police officer’s vehicle was broken into and items were stolen Tuesday.

Jackson Police have arrested Skylar Bell, 20, and Richard Andrew Dorsett, 22, of Mineral Wells, Texas, according to Friday news release from the Jackson Police Department. Both men are charged with burglary, theft of property over $500 and vandalism over $1,000 and are scheduled to be arraigned at 8 a.m. Monday in Jackson City Court via video link.

The release said Bell and Dorsett remain in the Madison County Jail and are awaiting extradition to Texas to face charges in that state, but will not be returned until their charges are disposed of in Tennessee. Both men were originally arrested by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department on the outstanding Texas charges.

On Tuesday, an off duty Jackson police officer returned to his personal vehicle after attending a movie at Hollywood Cinema, located at 575 Vann Dr. The victim discovered that someone had broken the glass on his truck and stole a personally owned handgun, holster and ammunition. Extensive damage to the vehicle was also caused during the burglary.

The release said Sgt. Al Newbern of the Madison County Sheriff's Department alerted Jackson police after obtaining information that Bell and Dorsett had been responsible for the auto burglary. Newbern and Sgt. Mack Brown, also of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, learned the men had pawned the stolen weapon at a local pawn shop. Investigators of the Jackson Police Department have recovered the weapon and have been able to charge the men because of the assistance of Newbern, Brown and the sheriff’s department.

The recovered property will be returned to the victim as soon as it is no longer needed for evidence, the release said.
