If you are going to make New Year's resolutions it is a good idea to look at your technology use. There are two simple things that you can change that will even coincide with other resolutions you may be making--such as becoming healthier.
First, spend less time online! According to recent studies people spend 18% of their online time on social media (e.g., Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest) alone. For the average visitor this means 6.75 hours on Facebook, 1.5 hours on Tumblr, and 1.5 hours on Pinterest each month. But remember this doesn't include Twitter, Google+, online video sites (e.g., Hulu, Netflix, YouTube), email or just surfing the net. Why not spend some of this time getting up and going outside--not plopping down in front of the TV instead. Take 30 minutes - an hour per day and go to the park or take up a physical activity. It's better than the alternatives of everything from deep vein thrombosis to obesity.
Second, clean it up! That's right...clean up that keyboard, the mouse, your monitors, desk area, email, software you're not using, apps, and system files. That's a great start and can help make you and your environment and system's healthier. All you need are things like canned air, screen wipes, and other cleaning supplies for your physical area. There are also software titles that can assist you with the rest. Some titles to check out include: CCleaner, CleanUp!, and Magician. Also while you are cleaning--run virus and malware scans on your system.
