The Bay Area Shuckers began forming their 2013/2014 team this past summer. They were quite successful in signing several new as well as returning players. Two of the first players to re-sign were All-Defense Danny Thompson who is returning for his second year and Derek Savage who is returning for his third season with the Shuckers.
The Bay Area Shuckers are proud to form their third team for their third season with the American Professional Basketball League. They are looking forward to another year. Their hopes are high for another play-off berth with championship hopes running high. The Shuckers won their first division title with a 10-6 regular season record, the Colonial Division Champions. They also advanced to the second round of the APBL playoffs.
Danny Thompson scored the fourth highest number of points in 2012-2013 Shuckers. During his rookie year, he scored 16.67 points a game. He ranked first in rebounds with 15.2 boards per contest. Also his stats showed he topped the Shuckers with 59 blocks. He set Shuckers single game marks with 25 rebounds and nine blocks. He also set team records for rebounds in a season (234) and rebounds per game (15.20). Thompson earned APBL Player of the Week honors twice and was named the Shuckers Coffee News Player of the Game three times.
Following his rookie season the accolades added up. He was a finalist for the APBL Most Valuable Player, runner-up for league Defensive Player of Year, and was named 1st Team All-APBL and 1st Team All-Defense. The Shuckers won their first division title with a 10-6 regular season record and advanced to the second round of the APBL playoffs.
Derek Savage is also returning for his fifth year as a pro and playing his third season for the Shuckers. Savage provided all-around solid numbers in the Shuckers inaugural season. In 2011/2012, he averaged 13.44 points per game, and ranked second in rebounds with 7.33 per contest, and finished third in assists with 3.78 per game. In nine games he scored in double digits seven times and had two double-doubles. He had a season high 21 points in a game, twice, and also had season high 12 rebounds twice.
After nearly a year off the court Savage returned to action in Week 11 of the Shuckers 2012/2013 season. Overall in six games he averaged 6.50 points, 1.67 rebounds, and 0.83 assists. After limited playing time in his first four games in the final two regular season games he averaged 12.5 points, four rebounds, and two assists per game.
“Derek was a member of our starting five in 2011/2012 and made an immediate impact when he returned after injury last season. We look for him to continue on his path back to the starting line-up this year,” said Bay Area Shuckers General Manager John Wolfe.
