Police are searching for two suspects who kidnapped and tortured a man for several hours in order to rob him Wednesday in Gwinnett County.
The incident began around 1:30 a.m. at the Bridgewater Apartments at 1500 Ridge Brook Trail, according to Gwinnett County police.
The man told police he had just arrived home when he was confronted by two men as he got out of his car, police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.
The suspects, who ware about 19 years old, ordered the victim back into his car at gunpoint and got in after him. They ordered him to get onto I-85 South. After passing a few exits, they ordered him to pull over.
“The victim was then forced into the back seat where he was pistol-whipped and beaten as the suspects demanded access to his bank account,” Cpl. Smith said.
One of the suspects then got into the driver’s seat to operate the vehicle while the second suspect remained in the back with the victim.
“The suspect in the back attempted to burn the victim with a cigarette lighter to gain the victim’s PIN number,” Cpl. Smith said.
The suspects went to the Wells Fargo Bank ATM machine at 2349 Cheshire Bridge Road and used the victim’s debit and credit cards with the PIN he provided.
Police have released photos of the ATM robbery. After obtaining money from the ATM, the suspects abandoned the victim and his vehicle at an apartment complex in Atlanta.
After the suspects fled, the victim was able to locate his car keys and drive home where his brother called police around 6:15 a.m., Cpl. Smith said.
“The victim’s brother reported that the suspects had demanded a ransom from him using the victim’s phone,” Cpl. Smith said. “The victim was in the custody of the suspects for nearly five hours and was attacked several times throughout.”
Although visibly injured, the victim did not wish to be taken to a hospital and remained with family.
