Last year, Serendipity Winery, of Naramata, was named BC Winery of the Year at the New York International Wine Competition. This year, they will be the only Canadian wine to be featured at this year’s Stampede, as part of the "10 Great Days, 10 Great Wines, 10 Great Stories" showcase.
Mother and daughter, Judy Kingston and Katie O'Kell, will be showing their two specially-labeled Stampede themed bottles from the 2010 vintage: the award-winning Serendipity Estate Syrah and Serendipity Reserve Serenata red blend.
The bottle of Serendipity Estate Syrah has a quote "Speak your mind but ride a fast horse" on the front label, along with a striking silhouette of 'Eve' wearing a cowboy hat and reaching for an apple. The back label shows a horse running at full gallop.
Vancouver wine writer, John Schreiner says of the 2010 Syrah, "I can't imagine a better wine with a good steak, medium rare. It begins with peppery and earthy aromas. On the palate, it is muscular, with flavours of dark plum and deli meats, finishing with a lovely dash of pepper." He scored it 92 points.
The quote on the front of the 2010 Serenata bottle says, "If you climb in the saddle, be ready for the ride" and there’s a picture of a seated man wearing a cowboy hat and holding the reins to his horse (which is featured on the back of the bottle).
Serenata is a Bordeaux style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. In his review, Schreiner says of this wine: "aromas of cassis and blueberry charge forth from the glass. The wine delivers on that promise, with flavours of black cherry, blackberry supported by long ripe tannins. There is a touch of espresso on the finish." He also scored it very highly, with another 92 points.
Kingston and O’Kell will be at the Stampede Grounds from 11:00am on July 8th, sharing their stories and pouring the wines at Ranahans and The Lazy S. Last year when they were here, they donated all the summer proceeds from their tasting room to the Red Cross’ Alberta Floods Fund.
Stampede just got even better!
