Two runners have been confirmed dead in the race to the finish line at the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in San Jose.
While the official race team hasn't staked the names on their site, as of publish the Santa Clara coroner has ID's the two runners: Brandon Whitehurst of Antioch and Rose Lo of South San Francisco.
While cause of death has not yet been confirmed, both runners were in their mid-30's and collapsed at the end of the race.
"Medical personnel were immediately on the scene and attempted to revive them, but were unsuccessful in their efforts," Dr. Lewis Maharam, medical director for the race, said in a statement to the press.
"These are unfortunate and tragic losses. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to their families and friends."
The
About 10,000 people participated in the race and these two deaths were the first since the San Jose Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon kicked off four years ago.
The Associated Press quotes some studies have estimated roughly 1 death per 50,000 runners, deaths occurring in half-marathons to be even more uncommon.
