A passerby may have helped save an elderly couple from a burning home early Thursday morning in Lawrenceville.
Shortly after 4:30 a.m. firefighters responded to a house in the 200 block of Lester Road. Someone had seen smoke and flames and had called 911, Gwinnett County fire spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.
The caller had knocked at the door, but got no response.
When firefighters arrived they found the garage area of the single-story, wood frame and brick house engulfed in flames, Capt. Rutledge said.
They immediately entered the home, battling the blaze while they search for any occupants. They found two, an older man and woman, both unresponsive.
The couple was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with paramedics performed advance life support measures, Capt. Rutledge said.
The home and vehicle were destroyed in the fire, he said. Hours later, firefighters later were still trying to determine what caused the blaze.
