Two plays at Union County Performing Arts Center this Valentine’s Weekend dramatize the perils (and hilarity) of looking for love in multiple wrong places.
* Feb. 14-15, 8 pm both days: Beyond Therapy: A Comedy by Christopher Durang presented by Mystic Vision Players at UCPAC Loft, 1601 Irving Street, Rahway NJ. Tickets: $15. www.ucpac.org
Beyond Therapy presents two contemporary Manhattanites — Prudence and Bruce — seeking stable romantic relationships with the help of their psychiatrists, each of whom suggests their patient place a personal ad and meet for a dinner date. It’s a prescription for comic insanity with outrageous side effects.
Mystic Vision Players has been entertaining New Jersey audiences with crowd-pleasing, professional quality theatre since 1992; their treatment of this American comedy classic is a perfect Valentine’s Day gift for the romantically inclined … as well as those whose for whom true love forever walks a fine line between farce and fiasco.
* Feb. 16, 2 pm: Menopause, The Musical presented by GFour Productions at UCPAC Mainstage, 1601 Irving Street, Rahway NJ. Tickets: $65, $55, $45, $35. www.ucpac.org
Since 2001, this hilarious musical parody has celebrated sisterhood with music and wit, set to classic tunes from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s that have audiences cheering and dancing in the aisles. The cast, Dyan Bender (Iowa Housewife), Donna J. Huntley (Professional Woman), Paula Kline-Messner (Soap Star) and June Lang (Earth Mother) are all stage, film and TV veterans.
Aside from the laughs and powerhouse singing, Menopause, The Musical also raises a healthy dialogue about issues of aging and women’s health. It’s wickedly funny theatre with a thought-provoking purpose.
