Two new paddling trails open in Texas

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will open the 23rd and 24th paddling trails in the state on December 16, 2010 near Jasper, TX. The Bevilport Paddling Trail and the Martin Dies, Jr. Paddling Trail will be dedicated at the Martin Dies, Jr. State Park on Thursday.

There will be a grand opening held at the Dining Hall adjacent to the boat ramp at 10:00 am. After the ceremony everyone is invited to paddle the new trails with their kayaks and canoes. There is also a limited supply of kayaks available on-site for rental.

The Bevilport Paddling Trail begins at the Bevilport boat ramp inside the state park. The trail is 12-miles one-way, offering four to six hours of float time on the Angelina and Neches Rivers. The take-out, or end of the trail, is located at the Walnut Boat Ramp, also inside the state park.

The Martin Dies, Jr. Paddling Trail offers three trails on B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir, Spring Creek and the Neches River. There are more than 16 miles of paddling available on this trail, with routes as short as 3.2 miles offering two to eight hours of paddling, depending on the route you choose. There are five designated take-outs along the trails, as well as loops that will bring you back to your put-in.

The Martin Dies, Jr. State Park is a 705-acre park that spans Jasper and Tyler Counties and along the shores of B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir and at the edge of the Big Thicket National Preserve. This area is heavily forested with numerous creeks and sloughs. The park has plenty of space to camp with more than 180 campsites, cabins and screened shelters.

When you are done paddling, the park offers four miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, a two-mile nature interpretive trail, playgrounds, fishing piers and a Texas State Park Store to explore.
