Every year toward the end of August, a rumor begins to circulate about a rare occurrence when two moons will appear in the sky and will be visible to the naked eye; the second moon will actually be the planet Mars in our Solar System and on the rare occasion it appears that we have two moons at the same time.

The moon appears just after the sun goes down above the skyline and if there are clear skies in your area, it will be highly visible around the world. Mars comes so close to the earth (about 34 million miles) that it will appear the same as the moon.

Two moons appearing at the same time happens only once every 1,000 years and isn’t scheduled to reappear until 2287. Or so the hoax email states.

NASA has reported that there is no such thing as two moons showing in the skies over the world. And that this rumor started in 2003 and has since reoccurred at the end of August every year since.
