When the police make a traffic stop, a number of thoughts run through the driver's mind. Amongst those thoughts, odds are the driver is not thinking about the police officer stealing their personal information.
Two Miami officers were in court last Thursday on charges of stealing information from over 1,000 people. Officers Malinsky Bazile and Vital Frederick were part of a city-wide crackdown on police officers abusing their authority and violating the law.
Bazile and Frederick allegedly stopped over 1,000 people over the past three years, collecting personal information including Social Security numbers and using that information to file false tax returns.
Bazile pocketed an estimated $140,000 over two years of the scam. Frederick was also charged with extorting a check cashing store in Liberty City.
The FBI has worked with the Miami police to take down officers involved in various crimes around the city. In the last year, 11 officers have been charged with crimes and removed from the force.
