NEW YORK - A highway crew in Wayne County discovered dead puppies in a roadside ditch on January 17.
Clyde resident Merlin Schmucker, 26, asked Jonathan Eicher, 19, from Lyons, to shoot an Australian Red Heeler and her nine healthy puppies after Schmuck was unable to sell them.
Since greed and money are what matters to Amish puppy mills, rather than the care and welfare of their animals, these puppies held no value to them.
Eicher allegedly admitted to police to killing them with a .22 caliber rifle last December. He referred to this act as “the three S’s: shoot, shovel, and shut up.”
According to Eicher, killing dogs under these circumstances is accepted by the Amish.
Schmucker and Eicher have been charged with animal cruelty and are due back in court next month.
