Although Maryland adopted the Common Core curriculum in June 2010, little information has been known about it among parents, the community, and teachers. In fact in August, the month of its implementation in Maryland, the curriculum was still being rolled out and teachers just being trained.
There will be two meetings this month that will present both sides of the controversial new curriculum.
Campaign For Liberty Baltimore County, a Liberty Movement organization, will host an informational meeting on the topic for its September meeting. The speaker is Cindy Sharretts, whom I have known since 2007 as an articulate, well researched advocate for educational freedom. The meeting will be held on September 4 at the Timonium Holiday Inn at 9615 Deereco Road at 7pm.
Maryland Public Schools will also be hosting a panel discussion which will include Dr. Lillian Lowery, State Superintendent of Schools, Ray Leone, Maryland PTA President, and a teacher panelist. The meeting will be held on September 19 from 7-8:30pm at Ridge Ruxton School, 6916 North Charles Street in Towson. There will be a Q&A period, so come with your questions and concerns. There will be three other school sponsored meetings around the state. For info, click here.
There will be a town hall meeting on September 10 at 6:30pm in Frederick at the American Legion Hall, 1450 Taney Avenue. There will be national speakers, a teachers union president, a school superintendent, as well as other speakers.
