A St. Augustine woman and a teenager from Jacksonville were killed in an accident on I-95 in Flagler County Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The FHP in Jacksonville says 56-year old Pamela Taylor Thor and 17-year old Michael Benjamin Chance Smith were killed in the accident south of Palm Coast Parkway on I-95. The FHP says a vehicle driven by 38-year old Roy Roger White of Jacksonville was northbound on I-95 at 5:25 Saturday afternoon, when the vehicle “…drifted in a north easterly direction onto the east shoulder.” Troopers say the driver then, “…overcorrected [the vehicle] and traveled across the northbound I95 travel lanes in a northwesterly direction.” Then, as the vehicle came onto the paved median and hit a guardrail, it also “…became airborne, traveled over the guardrail and entered the southbound lanes of I95.” The FHP says while the northbound vehicle was airborne, “…it struck the top of [another vehicle] which was traveling southbound in the inside travel lane.” The northbound vehicle then also “…struck the right front of [another vehicle] which was traveling southbound on I95 in the center lane.”
Troopers say the teenager was a passenger in the northbound vehicle and was ejected from the vehicle after the collision with the second southbound vehicle. The FHP says he had not been wearing a seat belt, and was transported to Halifax Hospital. Mr. White was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler for minor injuries. Ms. Thor had been the driver of the first southbound vehicle in the crash and the FHP says she had been wearing her seat belt. Her car stopped in a wood line along the west side of the interstate. One passenger in the second southbound vehicle had minor injuries in the crash, and the driver was not injured.
The accident closed all lanes of I-95 in Flagler County initially late Saturday afternoon, and just the southbound lanes Saturday evening.
