Two John Lennon radio specials honored in awards competition

Two radio specials about John Lennon as a member of the Beatles and a solo perfomer -- "Gimme Some Truth: A 70th Birthday Celebration With Yoko Ono" from the U.S. and "John Lennon: The New York Years" from the UK -- are among the music specials honored for excellence in the Best Music Specials category by New York Festivals. The awards were announced this month.

"Gimme Some Truth: A 70th Birthday Celebration With Yoko Ono," awarded a finalist certificate, was a 2010 EMI radio special in the U.S. that featured Yoko Ono discussing the thought process behind the John Lennon remasters. The program, hosted by Jody Denberg, was awarded a finalist certificate in the 2011 Best Music Special category.

"We recorded it in New York City last August three weeks after I worked with Paul McCartney on his 'Band On The Run' EPK," Denberg told us. "I mentioned to Yoko that the show was airing in more than 50 cities that week for John’s birthday and she said, “I know. It turned out good, didn’t it?” (You can hear the full program here.)

The program included audio of Lennon and comments from friends and associates, including David Bowie, Elton John, Bob Gruen, Klaus Voormann, Allan Tannenbaum, Elliot Mintz, Jack Douglas, Larry Kane and May Pang. (You can hear the program here.)

Other programs honored included Australian Broadcasting's "Refections and Voices", BBC Radio 6's "The John Bonham Story", RTE's "Jimi Hendrix -- Look Over Yonder," The Voice of Israel's "Bob Dylan Does Covers" and Ben Manila Productions' "Jimi Hendrix: West Coast Seattle Boy: The Radio Special" (Bronze Radio Winner).
