According to California Highway Patrol, the driver of the Dodge truck trailer, Matthew Gillespie, was transporting eight horses in a trailer equipped for only seven horses. When Gillespie tried to turn, the horses fell against the side of the trailer.
The driver tried to care for and remove the horses until help arrived.
Assisting the rescue of the horses were the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department, Santa Barbara Animal Services, and the Santa Barbara Humane Society and three local veterinarians.
The surviving horses have been taken to the Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center in Los Olivos. There have been no updates on their condition.
Rest in peace horses.
