Two-headed baby born in India: Conjoined twins share one body (pics)

A two-headed baby was born in India last week, and doctors are fearful that the conjoined twins – who have two heads and separate spinal cords – are unlikely to survive.

“The mother thought she was only carrying one baby because she was too poor to afford an ultrasound,” ABC News shared on Friday.

“Yes this report is perfectly true that we have delivered a female baby having two heads,” Dr. Ashish Sehgal, the CEO at the hospital where the girl was born, told ABCNews.com in an email. “She is presently alive and healthy.”

The infant was delivered last Wednesday via Caesarean section at the Cygnus JK Hindu Hospital in Sonipat, Haryana, in northern India. The infant’s mom, 28-year-old Urmila Sharma, as well as the doctors at the hospital, had no idea that she was carrying a two-headed baby girl until just a few weeks before her due date.

"We only came to know she was carrying conjoined twins after an ultrasound two weeks ago but it was too late to do anything by then," Dr. Shikha Malik, who delivered the baby, said.

The 7 lb. 7 ounce baby has only a “slim chance” of survival, doctors said. She remains in a neonatal unit at the hospital.

“The parents are very distressed and we are helping the family the best we can,” Dr. Malik said, adding that they hope to operate if the unnamed baby’s condition becomes more stable.

Conjoined twins that are born with two heads and a shared pelvis are termed Parapagus. Twins that are born as dithoracic parapagus, as this girl was, are fused at the abdomen and pelvis, but not the thorax. The phenomenon occurs in only 1 in 50,000 to 200,000 births.
