Recently on the Great Smoky Mountains Association (GSMA) blog, two great traditional, regional holiday recipes from some local ladies were posted, and they're definitely worth a look and a try.
First, from Mrs. J.O. Morrell's cookbook Mountain Makins in the Smokies, available at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Association store, there's a recipe for Hot Cider Toddy that demands to be tried. It looks like a great winter warmer. I might recommend taking advantage of the season's gifts and replacing either the orange or the orange juice (or both) with a tangerine or tangerine juice, respectively. You can get freshly squeezed tangerine juice at The Fresh Market stores or make your own from the plethora of tangerines available right now.
And second, from Bruna Winchester of Bryson City, NC, there's a great recipe for Sweet Potato Pie. Pumpkin and squash pies are popular around the holidays, and sweet potato pie is every bit as good, if a little different. If you've never had one, then you definitely should check out this recipe and give it a try.
As the GSMA blog says, for more great traditional recipes, you can pick up a copy of Food and Recipes of the Smokies either online at the provided link or at any GSMA bookstore location. A few more great, local recipes can be found on the GSMA blog under the heading Food of the Smokies Recipes. Give it a look!
